| The West Front
is to Hooke's original design. The Great Hall in the centre was
originally conceived on a very grand scale, but Conway presumably could
not afford it or thought it inappropriate, so the size was reduced to 'a
good proportion', in Hooke's words. Although Hooke designed the original
gardens, the present ones were re-laid in the late 19th century.
